SHADOWING ETIQUETTE

  1. Do Your Homework

Research the specialty your PA practices in, as well as relevant information about the clinic or healthcare setting. Bring your notes with you to help you better understand what you're observing and to show preparedness.

  2. Dress Appropriately

Some clinics prefer shadowing students to wear scrubs, while others may expect business casual attire. Be sure to confirm this with the clinic beforehand. Arriving fragrance-free is appreciated, as some patients may be sensitive or allergic to scents. Wear comfortable shoes—you’ll likely be on your feet for most of the day.

  3. Show Gratitude

If your circumstances allow, consider bringing a small token of appreciation. A simple gesture can go a long way in expressing your gratitude for the opportunity to shadow.

  4. Introduce Yourself and Set Expectations

Begin by formally introducing yourself to the PA and clinic staff. Ask the PA about their expectations to avoid miscommunication. For example, clarify whether you or the PA will introduce you to patients, and whether it's acceptable to take notes during or after patient encounters.

  5. Bring a Notebook

You will likely shadow in multiple specialties and settings, making it difficult to remember all details. In addition to pre-shadowing notes, record the clinic name, PA name, specialty, patient demographics, daily tasks, personal reflections, key takeaways, and any challenges you observed. These notes will be especially helpful when writing your shadowing experiences for CASPA.

  6. Ask Relevant Questions at Appropriate Times

Shadowing days can be fast-paced, with little downtime between patient visits. Establish early on when it’s best to ask questions—whether during breaks, after the last patient, or at the end of the day—so you don’t interrupt patient care.

  7. Send Thank-You Notes

A handwritten thank-you note, a thoughtful email thank-you note, or a little gift takes just a few minutes, but it leaves a lasting impression. Express your appreciation for the PA’s time, mentorship, and the opportunity to learn from their practice. Keep in touch in case you need a letter of recommendation down the line as well.

Best of luck,
